Multiple FHWA Funding Opportunities

The FHWA has a number of open funding opportunities which may be of interest.

Applications are open for the first round the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s PROTECT Discretionary Grant Program. PROTECT (Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-Saving Transportation) supports making surface transportation systems more resilient to natural hazards, including climate change and extreme weather events. A total of $848 million is available in funding, with an award floor of $100,000. This funding can support planning activities, resilience improvements, community resilience and evacuation routes, and at-risk coastal infrastructure. Applications are due by August 18, 2023. Applications are open for FY2023 funding through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program. A BIL program allocated $5 billion over 5 years, SS4A funds regional, local, and Tribal initiatives to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries. Over $1 billion in FY2023 funding is available, with awards falling between $100,000 and $25 million. Applications are due by 5pm ET on July 10, 2023. The NOFO can be found at this link. Applications are also open for the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program (WCPP). The WCPP is a competitive grant program with the goal of reducing wildlife vehicle collisions (WVCs) while improving habitat connectivity for terrestrial and aquatic species. Eligible applicants include:

  • State Departments of Transportation; 
  • Metropolitan Planning Organizations;
  • Units of local government;
  • Regional transportation authorities;
  • Special purpose districts or public authorities with a transportation function;
  • Indian tribes;
  • Federal Land Management Agencies; and
  • A group of any of the above entities.
