The Safe Routes Partnership has put together resources to help applicants successfully win Safe Streets and Roads for All funding. In 2025, there is $1 billion available for communities through the Safe Streets and Roads for All program to develop plans and implement strategies to improve roadway safety. The deadline is June 26, 2025. The Safe Routes Partnership hosted an informational webinar to address the FY2025 NOFO and provide application tips. The webinar recording can be found here.
The information below comes from attendance at that webinar
Type of Funding: SS4A funds are divided into two primary types of activities:
Planning and Demonstration Projects (40% of funds):
- Creation of a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan.
- Supplemental planning for the primary Safety Action Plan.
- Temporary demonstrations informed by the Safety Action Plan.
Implementation Projects (60% of funds):
- Permanent built projects addressing roadway safety.
- *Applicants interested in implementation grants should have an existing Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, or a similar plan, for their service area.
While SS4A is a discretionary grant influenced by current administration priorities, SS4A is also governed by prescriptive laws implemented by Congress that ensure funds are used for the priorities identified when the funds were appropriated.
Tips for Your 2025 Grant Application:
- Focus on the safety impact of your project, specifically how it will reduce traffic injuries and fatalities, including those of vulnerable road users.
- Align your project messaging with USDOT priorities.
- Ensure and communicate that you are prepared to implement your project as soon as funding is awarded.
- Follow the NOFO outline to ensure a complete and streamlined application.
Changes for the 2025 Grant:
- If the applicant is not the primary administrator of the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, they must include a letter of support and show coordination with the administering entity.
- The 2025 awarded projects will focus primarily on reducing roadway fatalities, with less emphasis on alternative transportation sources.
