Other panelists included Rolf Schmitt, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and Paul Bingham, S&P Global Market Intelligence. Joel Jundt, South Dakota Department of Transportation, moderated the session. Kissel’s presentation focused on economic resilience and rural regions’ priorities for transportation and economic development.

Kissel was also recently named the chair of the new TRB standing technical committee, Standing Committee on Transportation in Rural Areas. In this three-year term, Kissel will work with transportation professionals to identify research that benefit rural regions. For more information, view TRB’s website here or contact Kissel here.

TRB is part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. As a result, TRB’s mission includes three primary roles: researching over 150 publications annually, convening transportation professionals, and advising national audiences through consensus studies that influence policy and practice. Learn more about TRB here.

The NADO staff team participates in TRB in a variety of ways. First, NADO identifies national-level research needs where rural issues can be addressed. NADO shares also TRB resources with NADO’s rural transportation audiences. The NADO Research Foundation occasionally serves as a subcontractor to conduct research on TRB projects. In these ways, NADO brings rural and small metro perspectives from regional development organizations (RDOs) and regional transportation planning organizations (RTPOs) into national conversations on transportation research and practice.
