The Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Safety has released a new guide to support the performance management process. The Safety Performance Management Target Setting: Communication Plan and Toolkit is intended to assist transportation agencies measuring safety performance in compliance with federal regulations to communicate to the public why targets are being established and how they can engage in target-setting or in achieving the target. The communication plan describes potential audiences and appropriate messaging, including engagement with technical experts within transportation agencies, target supporters with a role in transportation safety, the general public and media, and those with a role in approving the targets that are proposed. The guide also describes communications tools and how to use them, such as dashboards, presentations, press releases, memos, talking points, and a social media kit. Documents such as supporting spreadsheets to create a dashboard are available for download.
