The National Center for Rural Road Safety has announced the Rural Road Safety Awareness Week occurring September 28 – October 2, 2020. Reach out to professionals and the public with posts about rural safety information, resources, and statistics. For instance, did you know that 70 percent of U.S. roads are rural while only 19 percent of the U.S. population lives in rural areas? Did you know that rural fatalities represent 45 percent of the total fatalities nationwide? Did you know 30 people a day are killed in rural roadway departure crashes.
Transportation practitioners are encouraged to participate through social media and share information about safety issues and solutions along the following themes:
- Monday: Defining Rural
- Tuesday: Rural Safety Champions
- Wednesday: Rural Road Modes
- Thursday: Proven Rural Safety Countermeasures
- Friday: Rural Safety Culture
Sample social media posts and graphics are available at https://ruralsafetycenter.org/news-events/rural-road-safety-awareness-week/. Share your safety story using the hashtags #RRSAW2020 and #RuralRoadSafety.
