On July 17, 2015, medicine will be delivered to the Remote Area Medical Clinic rural field hospital in Southwest Virginia in the nation’s first flight delivering medicine by drone. The flight will carry prescriptions for 20 people. A pilot will be on board as a safety precaution, but the aircraft will be controlled by remote stations based on the ground. A NASA aircraft will carry the drugs between two airports, and then a special-delivery drone will relay the medication the last mile to the county fairgrounds, where the field hospital is located.
