In August 2013, the organization Safe Kids Worldwide released the report Teens and Distraction: An In-Depth Look at Teens’ Walking Behaviors (PDF). The document reveals that 51 percent of pedestrian fatalities for ages 19 and under are children in the 15 – 19 age range. Safe Kids Worldwide observed middle school and high school students walking to school and noted that 1 in 8 middle school students and 1 in 5 high school students crossed the street while distracted. Texting and wearing headphones were the most common distractions noted. The report has suggestions for actions to reduce teen pedestrian deaths.
