The Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at North Dakota State University has released the 2017 Rural Transit Fact Book (PDF). Since 2011, this publication has been released annually, using rural transit data from the National Transit Database to provide information about transit providers receiving Federal Transit Administration (FTA) section 5311 Non-Urbanized Area Formula Program funding. Other funding programs also are used to provide transit service in rural areas, but data are not available nationally for programs such as FTA section 5310 Transportation for Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities Program funds. The 2017 edition provides more information about geographic areas served by rural transit providers compared to previous editions.
