WISQARS (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System)

In This Article:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WISQARS™ (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System) is an interactive, online database that provides fatal and nonfatal injury, violent death, and cost of injury data from a variety of trusted sources. Researchers, the media, public health professionals, and the public can use WISQARS™ data to learn more about the public health and economic burden associated with unintentional and violence-related injury in the United States.

Transportation planners may find fatal and nonfatal injury data useful, as well as fatal injury mapping, which shows fatal injury rates by county within a state. The data includes transportation-related injuries and fatal injuries, as well as several sub-categories within transportation including motor vehicle occupant, pedestrian or cyclist.  The data can be analyzed by age groups and other demographic settings.  Data can be downloaded in Excel, and maps can be saved as images.

Other useful resources in WISQARS include Cost of Injury Reports which describe the economic cost of injuries (including transportation-related injuries), and charts presenting the leading causes of injury and death by age group, which show how transportation safety compares to other causes of injury and death.

WISQARS is also available as a mobile app.  Learn more about WISQARS at https://www.cdc.gov/injury/wisqars/index.html.
