The Federal Highway Administration recently released the guidebook Applying Safety Data and Analysis to Performance-based Transportation Planning.  This guidebook reviews both basics and advanced methods of collecting and analyzing safety data.  Types of analysis such as benchmarking, crash trends and contributing factors, evaluating focus crash types, network screening, systemic analysis, and corridor and intersection planning analysis are discussed.  In addition, the guidebook presents how those types of analyses can be used to institutionalize considerations of safety, develop goals and objectives, identify performance measures and targets, and prioritize and program transportation projects.
