The Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) has released the new report Dialysis Transportation: Intersection of Transportation and Healthcare.  In a survey conducted as part of the research project, one-third of rural transit agencies reported that dialysis trips are at least 10 percent or more of their specialized trips.  This issue is significant for rural agencies and rural residents, as well as those in urban or suburban areas, because transportation as a factor in missed and shortened dialysis treatments, which leads to negative health outcomes.  In addition to the report, an Excel tool is available for estimating current and projected future demand for dialysis trips, costs for such trips, and potential decreases in demand and costs if home dialysis increases.  Learn more and access the report, Excel tool, and supplementary information at http://www.trb.org/main/blurbs/178786.aspx.
