Southern Georgia Adopts Regional Transportation Sales Tax

In This Article:

This week, voters adopted a sales tax to support transportation investments in the 18-county region served by the Southern Georgia Regional Commission.  The region’s stakeholders identified transportation priorities through a roundtable process and presented the list to the public in advance of voting on the one-cent, 10-year transportation sales tax ballot initiative.  Over 10 years, the tax is expected to generate over $500 million.  Three-quarters of the funds will support the list of transportation projects adopted by the regional roundtable, while the remaining 25 percent of funds are distributed to participating local governments for their transportation project, equipment or other needs.  The regional transportation sales tax passed in Southern Georgia is only the fourth to be adopted in the state after enabling legislation was passed in 2010.
