Resilience and Transportation Planning

In This Article:

The Federal Highway Administration has released a new resource called Resilience in Transportation Planning, highlighting opportunities within the planning process to consider vulnerability of the transportation system to disruptions and hazards.  Brief examples from MPOs and state transportation agencies include consideration of resilience in the vision, goals and objectives in long-range plans; conducting a vulnerability study that shapes long-range planning; project prioritization and performance criteria; and project development.  Resilience is a new planning factor added by the 2015 Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.  For other resources and information on resilience, visit https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/sustainability/resilience.
