The NADO Research Foundation currently conducts research and training events through two programs, the Center for Transportation Advancement and Regional Development and Transportation Planning Capacity Building program, both supported by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Center for Transportation Advancement and Regional Development

Under a cooperative agreement with FHWA, the Center for Transportation Advancement and Regional Development provides training, information and professional resources for small metropolitan and rural regions to pursue innovative strategies that expand the capabilities, capacity and effectiveness of a region’s transportation network.

The Center research and writes several special reports each year through an ongoing national scan for innovative practices, trends and emerging issues related to regional transportation and economic development.  The Center also develops content for the Rural Transportation Newsletter, supports training at the National Rural Transportation Peer Learning Conference and other events, compiles the documents found in the Resource Library, and enhances relationships with partnering organizations.

Transportation Planning Capacity Building

The NADO Research Foundation is also completing other work with support from the Federal Highway Administration to provide resources and build capacity among rural and small metropolitan planning organizations.  Current work relates to sustainable communities, performance-based planning, and enhancing partnerships among local, regional, and state transportation agencies and other stakeholders, as well as promoting innovation in regional planning efforts.
