On October 31, 1:00 -3:00 p.m. ET, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute will hold a free webinar on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).  The webinar will include a presentation of the effectiveness of current ADAS technologies in reducing crashes and injuries, an overview of current and projected implementation of ADAS technologies in the fleet, and an update on research on automated driving technologies.  This research has been conducted by the two institutes, which are nonprofit scientific and educational institutions supported by auto insurers and insurance associations.

ADAS are features available in some cars today that help the driver to maintain safe operation of the vehicle.  This can include adaptive cruise control (maintaining a set speed and following distance), active lane keeping (steering assistance that centers a vehicle within lane markings), and other technologies.  This webinar may be of interest to rural transportation planners or rural infrastructure owners.  ADAS might have impacts on improving safety in certain situations, and a disproportionate number of fatal crashes in the United States occur on the rural transportation network.  However, ADAS do not always function as expected in tests.
