The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has announced a Notice of Proposed Amendments (NPA) to revise information in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).  The MUTCD defines the standards that road managers nationwide use to install and maintain traffic control devices on all public streets, highways, bikeways, and private roads open to public travel.  Traffic control devices include road markings, signs, and traffic signals.

The proposed changes are intended to reflect advances in technologies and operational practices, incorporate recent trends and innovations, and set the stage for automated driving systems.  These changes include devices related to bicycle and pedestrian safety, a new U.S. Bicycle Route signage design, revised procedures for posting speed limits, new criteria for certain safety-related signage, operational changes, and more.  Interested parties must submit comments by March 15, 2021.  View the NPA and find directions to submit comments here.
